Portland Praise and Prayer – About Us
Welcome to Portland Praise and Prayer
Portland Praise and Prayer is a local church that is part of the Body of Christ on Portland. We are a non-denominational group of disciples who hold to the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith. We meet regularly to share fellowship with one another, to teach and learn, to pray and to share the Lords Supper. We actively seek God’s guidance and presence in all that we do.
We started in autumn 2021 out of a joint passion to see the Kingdom of God extended on our island of Portland. To see this achieved, God emphasised to us to prioritise our relationships with one another and with other churches, and with Christians on the island – thus promoting unity.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13: 34-35
MEETINGS
We meet every Sunday evening at the Girt Hall, St. George’s Centre, Reforne, DT5 2AN from 6pm to just after 7pm.
The Beacon Meeting – the first Sunday of each month is an opportunity for Christians of any church, or none, to join as one family to praise God and pray for the island. It is for building up the people of God, for motivating and equipping us all to be the people God has called us to be.
The Beacon is a strong, reliable, and bright light shining the love of God into the community of Portland.
A place of going out.
The Harbour Meeting – is held each week (except where a Beacon event occurs) to provide a local church community, to which people seeking fellowship, worship and teaching on a regular basis can belong.
- A place where those who do not yet know the Lord are welcomed to come and experience his love, truth, and gentleness.
- A place where people can easily find God, to learn about Him, and how to serve Him.
- A place where people can develop their faith and personal walk with the Lord.
- A place where people receive and develop their gifts, given by God, in order to further the Kingdom of God in our communities.
- A place for all to find refreshment, rekindle hope and soak in His presence.
The Harbour is a safe refuge providing shelter and support for all who would enter into its walls.
A place of coming in.
Our meetings are Spirit-led (we hope!), informal and give opportunity for anyone to contribute. We would describe ourselves as biblical, evangelical and charismatic.
DURING THE WEEK
Midweek meetings for bible study (Tuesday evenings) and prayer (early Friday mornings) are held on Zoom. Talk to Dave Farmer if you would like to join one of these meetings.
WHO LEADS PORTLAND PRAISE & PRAYER?
We are led by a group of eight people with varied backgrounds, experience, and gifts – all of whom have previous leadership experience and all of whom live on the island.
FINANCES
We do not take up regular offerings, except for occasional specific causes. If you belong to another church, consider your financial giving to them as your priority.
VISION
To work together to support and encourage all the Christian churches on the isle in order to see God’s Kingdom grow. A practical outworking of this is our involvement and support in the working group “Christians Working Together on Portland”.
AND FINALLY…
Wherever you settle (and we really don’t mind), we pray that God will bless you and release you to be an active part of what He wants to do on our beautiful island.
If you’re at the meeting, speak to anybody here to find out more or contact us using the details below.
